Sheridan Maine is currently working in partnership with a dynamic and growing Hertfordshire-based organisation to recruit an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a detail-oriented and proactive finance professional to take ownership of key transactional finance processes while playing a pivotal role in month-end reporting, payroll, and continuous process improvement.

This position offers exposure across all areas of finance operations, making it ideal for someone looking to broaden their experience and develop within a supportive and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant:

Manage accounts receivable processes, including invoice processing, credit control support, and aged debtor reporting Handle accounts payable activities, including invoice processing, payment runs, and supplier statement reconciliations Support payroll processing on a monthly basis, ensuring accuracy of employee payments and data maintenance Assist with statutory payroll requirements including PAYE, NI, pensions, and year-end reporting Support month-end close processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations Reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including bank, sales, and purchase ledgers Maintain accurate financial records and ensure strong audit trails are in place Support VAT returns and ensure correct tax treatment of transactions Assist with the use and maintenance of finance systems, ensuring data accuracy and integrity Support internal controls and compliance with accounting standards and company policies Work collaboratively with internal teams to resolve financial queries and support business operations Provide ad-hoc financial information and reporting to support management decision-making

The successful Assistant Accountant:

AAT qualified (or working towards) or equivalent relevant experience Experience in a finance or accounting role with exposure to transactional finance Strong understanding of core finance processes including AP, AR and reconciliations Highly organised with strong attention to detail and accuracy Proactive, adaptable and willing to support a busy finance team
