Eligible applicants must have at least 10 years of CNC grinding machinist experience.

Position Summary: Sets up and operates variety of grinding machines, such as external, internal, and form CNC grinders to grind metal pieces, such as machine parts, dies, or tools according to knowledge of grinding procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Studies blueprint or layout on work piece to visualize grinding to be done and plans sequence of operations.
  • Selects grinding wheel, applying knowledge of abrasives and metal properties and secures it on spindle, using wrench. Dresses wheel with dressing device.
  • Selects feed rates, grinding speeds, depth of cuts, and grinding wheel of size, shape, and grade for each operation, applying knowledge of metal properties, abrasives, product specifications, and shop mathematics.
  • Writes CNC program of machine instructions to regulate the movement of grinder along grinding path.
  • Moves controls to set-up wheel position and work piece in relation to each other.
  • Starts machine and engages CNC programs.
  • Operate the Birchwood Casey Black Oxide System.
  • Revises CNC program to eliminate instruction errors.
  • Observes operation and adjusts position and action of wheel and work piece.
  • Verifies dimensions of ground work pieces for conformance of specifications, using measuring instruments, such as templates, micrometers, dial indicators, and gauge blocks. Works to tolerances of plus or minus 0.0001 inch.
  • Dresses grinding wheels to complex profiles using special fixtures and tools.
  • Sets up machine for first article when required.
  • Communicates with supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Inspects and measures parts to maintain quality including statistical process control charts when required.
  • Complies with established policy, safety standards, and quality procedures to ensure internal and external customer satisfaction.

Minimum Requirements

Training and Experience:

  • High school or equivalent and between 2 and 4 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship or a combination thereof.
  • Minimum of 10 years of CNC Grinding Machinist experience required.

Physical Demands: The employee is required to:

  • stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead and bend to the floor
  • exert at a minimum 50 pounds of force occasionally
  • lift up to 75 pounds occasionally
  • weight, force or shape of object may require the use of overhead crane or lifting assist

Working Conditions: The employee is subject to an industrial worksite including but not limited to:

  • noise from operating machines
  • moving equipment or moving machine parts
  • objects that may have sharp edges or burrs
  • machine shop related chemicals that may require restricted handling and proper use of PPE
