Job Summary

The Elevator Hoist Foreman is responsible for overseeing all construction hoist operations on active job sites, including installation, operation, maintenance, and dismantling. This role leads hoist crews, ensures compliance with safety regulations and NYC DOB requirements, and coordinates closely with project teams to maintain efficient workflow, productivity, and high safety standards. The Foreman also monitors manpower, manages documentation, and provides hands-on support as needed to ensure successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and management to understand project needs, scope, sequencing, and schedules.
  • Coordinate with the General Foreman and project teams to ensure alignment on hoist-related activities.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant job site by enforcing OSHA, NYC DOB, and manufacturer safety standards for hoist operations.
  • Oversee all aspects of hoist systems, including installation, climbing, tie-ins, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and dismantling.
  • Supervise hoist operators, mechanics, and labor crews, and coordinate hoist usage with other trades to prevent delays and conflicts.
  • Monitor manpower, productivity, and work schedules to ensure efficiency, cost control, and minimal overtime.
  • Perform and ensure proper documentation of daily inspections, testing, and maintenance in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Complete administrative duties including safety meetings, hazard analyses, fall protection plans, payroll, inventory tracking, equipment logs, change orders, and job documentation.
  • Review pre-job plans, hoist layouts, and engineering drawings to ensure accurate installation and execution.
  • Identify and document out-of-scope work to support change order processing and cost recovery.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues to minimize downtime and maintain workflow.
  • Perform hands-on work as needed to support installation, adjustments, repairs, and system modifications.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with construction hoists in commercial or high-rise environments.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience managing hoist crews or similar teams.
  • Strong understanding of rack-and-pinion and cable-driven hoist systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, hoist layout drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Experience performing and documenting required hoist inspections.
  • Familiarity with jobsite reporting tools for timekeeping, safety documentation, and inventory tracking.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across trades, field teams, and management.
  • Proven leadership ability, including training, mentoring, and enforcing safety and performance standards.
  • Physically capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record and ability to travel between job sites.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification required.
  • NYC SST (62-Hour) Card required per Local Law 196.
  • OSHA Hoist Competent Person designation (or willingness to obtain within 30 days).
  • Knowledge of NYC DOB Chapter 33 and New York State Labor Law (§240 & §241).
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, manufacturer standards, and local regulations related to construction hoists.
