General Counsel
Establish, design, and model a UK-wide legal team as a shared service for the UK-based business operations, and lead and manage the Legal function for the MRS-GM business as a trusted legal business partner.
Responsibilities
- Form and shape the UK-wide legal team based on business partner principles, ensuring high-quality functional legal excellence.
- Develop topical expertise in centres of excellence to avoid duplication of resources.
- Define clear accountabilities and decision rights of Legal Business Partners while fostering collaboration and cross-departmental exchange.
- Coach and develop individual legal business partners to take full accountability for their areas and enable functional growth.
- Ensure standard best legal practices across UK lines of business.
- Manage and challenge outside counsel spending.
- Implement smart governance with a lean, proportionate approach.
- Act as an operational Legal Business Partner for MRS-GM, providing state-of-the-art legal advice to all UK-based legal entities, including its Lloyd’s Syndicate.
- Collaborate with regional Munich Re legal resources and delegate legal topics that affect countries outside the UK.
- Continuously review legal support in collaboration with the business to meet emerging needs and support primary specialty business growth.
- Oversee wordings advice to MRS-GM entities and coordinate with Corporate Underwriting for consistent processes.
- Manage legal advice related to outsourcing contracts both intra-group and externally.
- Interact with the Claims function to facilitate oversight of litigation reporting within GSI4.
- Support implementation of the Legal, Risk and Compliance Target Operating Model.
Knowledge and Skills
- English Law qualified solicitor with a current practising certificate.
- Senior lawyer with extensive experience in private practice and/or in-house, preferably within the insurance industry.
- Proven track record of effectively managing and driving complex legal matters to completion.
- Understanding of business strategy and the work of other departments.
- Strong motivational and personnel management skills.
- Excellent negotiation skills.
