Columbia Mental Health is seeking a Licensed Mental Health Therapist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department in Washington, DC. In this role, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based outpatient psychotherapy and mental health services to a diverse adult and adolescent population experiencing mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and other psychiatric conditions. You will conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, formulate individualized treatment plans, and deliver ongoing individual, family, and group therapy using advanced therapeutic approaches tailored to each patient’s needs.
As a core member of an interdisciplinary care team, you will collaborate closely with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, case managers, and other mental health professionals to support holistic, patient-centered care. You will monitor clinical progress, adjust treatment plans based on outcomes, and coordinate referrals to internal and community resources as appropriate. The role requires maintaining timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation within our electronic medical record system, including assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries in accordance with agency, state, and federal standards.
Therapists at Columbia Mental Health are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards of practice, safeguard patient confidentiality, and contribute to a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed therapeutic environment. You will actively participate in case consultations, clinical supervision, and interdisciplinary team meetings to review complex cases, integrate best practices, and support effective care transitions. You will also contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives, using outcome measures and patient feedback to enhance service delivery.
This position is well suited for licensed clinicians who value an inclusive, supportive, and empathetic workplace culture. Columbia Mental Health prioritizes innovation and collaboration to improve patient outcomes, and we encourage therapists to bring curiosity and creativity to their clinical work. You will have regular opportunities to engage with leading mental health professionals, attend internal and external trainings, and stay current with emerging evidence-based modalities.
We are committed to your professional growth. In this role, you will receive ongoing education and skills development in areas such as differential diagnosis, complex trauma, co-occurring disorders, and culturally responsive care. You will be encouraged to pursue specialized interests—such as trauma-focused interventions, LGBTQ+ mental health, or integrative approaches—while benefiting from mentorship, peer consultation, and structured professional development pathways.
Candidates should bring strong clinical judgment, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to build trusting, therapeutic relationships with individuals from varied cultural, socioeconomic, and lived-experience backgrounds. Comfort working with electronic health records, managing a steady caseload, and balancing clinical, administrative, and coordination tasks is essential. Experience with crisis intervention and risk assessment is highly valued, as you will occasionally assist in evaluating and managing patients in acute distress, following established safety and escalation protocols.
Columbia Mental Health offers a stable, collaborative environment in which therapists can focus on delivering exceptional care while building a sustainable, long-term career in mental health. By joining our team, you will help advance our mission of providing comprehensive, individualized psychiatric services to the Washington, DC community, while expanding your own expertise as a mental health professional.
