Job Summary
Respiratory Therapists are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing care to our patients. We’re seeking a compassionate, patient, and problem-solving Respiratory Therapist who will take our breath away and give it back to our patients. Primary Responsibilities for Pulmonary Function Lab RT
PFL Respiratory Therapist primarily performs diagnostic tests. These tests can include spirometry, diffusion testing, lung volumes, airway resistance, respiratory muscle forces, bronchial provocation testing, asthma exercise testing, exhaled nitric oxide testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, home oxygen evaluations, six minute walk tests, arterial blood gases and other tests that a doctor orders. In addition to testing patients, the PFL Respiratory Therapist may be asked to administer respiratory therapies and educate patients on the use of their medications and equipment. They must also be able to calibrate, clean and maintain diagnostic equipment and recognize when equipment malfunctions.
Secondary Responsibilities
PFL Respiratory Therapists spend most of their time performing noncritical testing. However, they must be prepared to respond during an emergency, such as by performing CPR. They may be asked to cross train in Pulmonary Rehab, be a student preceptor, help during new-employee orientation, prepare the next day’s schedule and insure orders are in the patient’s EMR.
Qualifications
A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory care program is required; minimum associate degree or equivalent as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Respiratory Therapists must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care, as well as knowledge of equipment utilized in their department. Demonstrates the ability and knowledge required to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering for quality care. Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
Must have Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Must obtain site-specific specialty credential(s) such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), etc.
