NSC Staffing is seeking a dependable Sheetmetal Fitter Helper to support shipboard and shipyard fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal components aboard U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, and commercial vessels. This position works under the supervision of a Supervisor or Journeyman and supports HVAC, berthing, galley, and non?structural shipboard systems.

Position Overview
The Sheetmetal Fitter Helper assists in the removal, fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal products and equipment, including HVAC ducting, furniture, non?structural bulkheads, ceilings, berthing systems, and food service equipment. The role requires physical stamina, attention to safety, and the ability to follow technical instructions in active shipyard and shipboard environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the removal, layout, fabrication, assembly, and installation of sheet metal components.
  • Support installation and repair of HVAC ducting, berthing equipment, galley equipment, joiner doors, and non?structural bulkheads and ceilings.
  • Read and follow drawings, work instructions, specifications, and verbal instructions from supervisors and journeymen.
  • Assist with measurement, layout, trimming, grinding, filing, deburring, and surface preparation using hand and power tools.
  • Use hand tools and power tools safely, including shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers.
  • Assist with bolting, riveting, screwing, clipping, caulking, and bonding components.
  • Participate in pre?production inspections and assist with documenting findings.
  • Assist with operational testing and documentation.
  • Assist with documenting Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) and writing Condition Found Reports (CFRs) as required.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas with special emphasis on fire prevention and hot work requirements.
  • Support Lock?Out/Tag?Out activities as directed.
  • Comply with OSHA regulations and shipyard safety requirements at all times.
  • Complete assigned tasks and report unfinished work status to the supervisor or journeyman.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.
  • Working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment nomenclature.
  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience, including some maritime or shipyard experience.
  • Experience repairing and installing berthing equipment, galley equipment, HVAC ventilation ducting, and joiner doors.
  • Ability to interpret applicable sections of NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard standards, and manufacturers' technical manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Understanding of U.S. customary and metric measurement systems.
  • Ability and willingness to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to write Condition Found Reports (CFRs).
  • Must be physically and medically capable of wearing all required PPE.

Work Environment

  • Active shipyard and shipboard environments.
  • Work may be conducted indoors, outdoors, and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
  • Exposure to confined spaces, scaffolding, ladders, manlifts, machinery, power tools, noise, dust, fumes, and varying weather conditions.
  • PPE is mandatory and includes hard hats, safety glasses, steel?toe footwear, respirators, harnesses, and flotation gear as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift/push/pull:
    • 50-100 lbs occasionally (0-33% of shift)
    • Up to 20 lbs frequently (34-66% of shift)
  • Prolonged standing (2-3 hours), bending, squatting, kneeling, crawling, and climbing.
  • Ability to work at various heights and levels, including overhead.
  • Ability to access confined spaces through openings as small as 18" x 36".
  • Ability to work at heights above 12 feet using ladders, scaffolding, or manlifts.
  • Ability to safely maneuver uneven surfaces and obstacles.
  • Sufficient grip strength and coordination to operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to respond to visual, verbal, and audible instructions.
