In this job, you’ll support the safe and reliable operation of our water pumping, storage, transmission, and distribution systems, as well as our gas distribution infrastructure on Catalina Island. This role performs essential field and facility maintenance, supports customer service needs, and ensures compliance with operational, safety, and environmental standards.

Water System Responsibilities

  • Regulate pumping, storage, transfer, and chlorination of water following established operating procedures.
  • Inspect, install, maintain, and repair wells, pumps, dams, reservoirs, tanks, filters, pipelines, valves, meters, right-of-way systems, and related equipment.
  • Perform meter reads, chart changes, and operational checks.
  • Investigate customer inquiries and take action to restore normal water service.
Gas System Responsibilities
  • Inspect, install, maintain, and repair gas transmission/distribution lines, valves, meters, and pressure regulators.
  • Conduct leak tests and collect samples as needed.
  • Turn customer gas service on/off for work and relight pilot lights.
  • Perform meter reads, chart changes, and troubleshoot issues to restore normal gas operations.
Field Operations & Equipment
  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment including trucks, backhoe/skip loaders, air compressors, jackhammers, tampers, welding and cutting tools, hoists, winches, threading and flaring tools, grinders, drill presses, and other shop machinery.
  • Mix, place, and finish concrete/asphalt for restoration of sidewalks, driveways, or roadways associated with construction projects.
  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems in company-owned facilities.
  • Assist Electrical or Plant Operating/Maintenance Crews as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Class C Driver’s License
  • 2 or more years experience as a Water Treatment Operator or Water Distribution Operator.
  • Class 2 Water License: Possess a current California SWRCB Grade II Distribution certificate along with a California SWRCB Grade II Treatment certificate.
  • Must be able to work overtime/ weekends on short notice.
  • Must be able to work a set work schedule of 6:00AM - 4:30PM (4/10 work schedule).
  • This position will be located on Catalina Island. All successful candidates must reside on Catalina or be able to relocate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work from drawings, sketches, specifications, written or oral instructions according to Company Accident Prevention Rules, established codes, and standard practices and perform similar and incidental duties as required.

  • ** Please Note: This position is located on Catalina Island. Daily commuting from the mainland to Catalina Island is not a viable option. All successful candidates must relocate to or currently reside on Catalina. **
  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Reference our Information Guides for the following tests: 8180- Catalina Water & Gas System Mechanic Knowedge Test (verbal) and 4029- Catalina Physical Performance Test. Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position.
