A Secondary Controls / Pilot Controls Technician specializes in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of advanced mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic control systems, often in aerospace or heavy machinery environments. They ensure precise operation of systems like flight controls, actuators, or automated production equipment by working from blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshoot and repair complex electromechanical components, such as servo valves, sensors, and actuators.
System Testing: Calibrate, test, and tune control systems to meet performance specifications using precision instruments.
Installation & Assembly: Assemble, wire, and install control panels, junction boxes, and related hardware.
Technical Documentation: Review, interpret, and maintain technical manuals, engineering drawings, and work package documentation.
Documentation: Record maintenance actions, test results, and update schematics in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
Production Support: Assist with the commissioning of new machinery and provide technical guidance for machine shop equipment.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
Experience
Generally requires several years of related maintenance experience, with some roles seeking senior or Subject Matter Expert (SME) levels.Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical circuits.
Skills
Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic test equipment.Analytical Ability: Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose malfunctions and perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
Education: High school diploma or GED is standard, with technical school, military training, or an associate degree in automation/electrical engineering being highly preferred.
Communication: Effective verbal and written skills for collaborating with engineering and production teams.
Common Working Conditions
Environment: Industrial or manufacturing settings, which may involve working in tight spaces or high-production areas.
Safety: Strict adherence to OSHA, EPA, and FAA regulations, often involving hazardous material Handling (HAZMAT).
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy objects and work with various tools and equipment.
